Imagine my surprise when I opened the package and found that almost half of the book, including the cover, was missing. I immediately returned the book, hoping to exchange it for an in tact version, and was told that I could not do that.
I forget the reason but it was disappointing. The question I have is, “How could anyone send out half a book? This book is frequently mentioned in bibliographies you find in photo history titles and though it was published in I always thought this was a wonderful overview of photography from the preceding two decades.
In the first twenty-five pages Szarkowski writes in his usual succinct style about the changes in photography from the sixties: The rest of the pages carry photos fourteen in color from eighty-four photographers and I think it is a very comprehensive collection, including several semi-abstract works John Mott-Smith, Ray Metzker or Robert Heinecken for example.
The landscape format works well, captions are on each page and the screen printing is fine. Best of all you can pick up copies of the hardback or paperback quite cheaply.
